Sustainable Development Goals of Mapúa University

“… to equip its students with knowledge that will help them come up with design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems with consideration for the public health, safety, cultural, societal and the environment;

… to ensure that its graduates have the ability to understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental context and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development.

So, these are the outcomes that we want for our students, for our graduates. That these outcomes found their way to the teaching of engineering all over the world shows us that over the past two decades or so, the consciousness about sustainability has really taken root globally.”

(This is part of Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea’s speech during the first Fund for Engineering Development and Institutional Linkages (FEDIL) forum in Mapúa on January 25, 2011.)

MAPUA has long been an advocate of environment conservation and engineering for the environment as evident in its program offerings.

  • BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering (1958)
  • MS Environmental Engineering (2001)
  • PhD Environmental Engineering (2004)
  • BS Civil Engineering - BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering double-degree program (2012)
  • BS Environmental Planning (2018)

MAPUA strongly promotes environment and sustainable development (ESD) as evident in its curriculum.

  • The BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering curriculum includes 17-unit courses related to protection and conservation of the environment.
  • Environmental engineering and environmental science courses are included in all engineering and non-engineering programs.
  • The 3BIRDS criteria is implemented in major design courses in BS Civil Engineering.
  • The BS Architecture program has a specialization track in Sustainable Design.
  • The MS Architecture program has a specialization track in Sustainable Architecture.
  • The BS Industrial Design program has a course on Sustainable Design.
  • Sustainable Design Principles are embedded in the Architectural Design courses, especially in Architectural Design 4 - Vernacular Architecture and Ecological Design.
  • The BS Interior Design program has an elective course on Sustainable Design Principles and Techniques.

MAPUA launched its I GO FOR VALUE initiatives for 2010 – 2020, where “R” stands for reduction of carbon footprint.

MAPUA established the Sustainable Development Research Office (SDRO) in 2011, renamed it to Resiliency and Sustainable Development Center (RSDC) in 2019.

MAPUA commits itself to protect the environment and achieve its set goals in pollution prevention, energy conservation, waste reduction, and resource-use optimization - a commitment declared in its Integrated Management System Policy.

Since 2010, MAPUA has consciously and earnestly paved a way to contribute to sustainable development, locally and globally, through instruction, research, and extension.
